WEB PAGE REPORT

Web page is up to date as per Ted Gutmann. The annual meeting and registration forms were added. Sue Ketcham asked if the links from the old page were going to be reinstated. Ted indicated the content links could be relinked. The old page is still the first result to appear on a Google search. Danielle suggested redirecting.

PROGRAMS

Past Programs:

Technical Information Forum: (11/5/09 East Hampton Library) Danielle Zubiller reported that Martha Turner from Cablevision's Power to Learn Department spoke on the options for libraries where static IP addresses remain. Check the Power to Learn website at www.powertolearn.com .

Min Liu announced the new LILRC new phone system is up and running. As the price was less expensive than projected, the system will pay for itself in two years.

Next TIF meeting is Thursday, 12/3/09 at Sayville Public Library, 10:00 a.m. for coffee.

Open Source Software (Part I): (10/22/09 South Country Public Library, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.) Five panelists led the discussion: Ted Gutmann (open source mail), Dominick Iadiccio (firewalls, networking applications), Bob Johnson, Andrew White & Joe Balsamo (open source web sites and network IP management tools). About 30 people had registered but 10 additional people attended. A common theme in implementing open source applications was that time and personnel are essential.

Upcoming Programs:

Long Island Library Conference (5/6/10) Bob Johnson suggested the November TIF program be presented again at the LILC using the CD-ROMs that he created. These will be handed out at the LILC. Open source will be defined and examples presented. The focus will be on open source applications, not servers. The Board encouraged that this program be of a general, not technical, nature. The web site for the Conference is available.

Annual Meeting: Cloud Computing: (12/9/09, Brentwood Public Library, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.) Bob Johnson arranged for a panel of speakers from local companies who are involved in cloud computing: Raj Sethi, CEO & founder, Ekartha Inc.; Gurpreet Singh, VP of Product Development & Marketing, Ekartha Inc.; Tom McCormack, VP of Managed Hosting, Mindshift. Danielle Zubiller indicated the Brentwood Library will arrange for the refreshments. Mellissa Hinton moved that $150 be allocated for refreshments; seconded by Wendy Reeve; approved. Regarding honoraria for the speakers, Bob Johnson told the speakers they would be given $200 each to include the transportation costs. Sue Ketcham moved that the allocated amount be amended from $500 to $750; Wendy Reeve seconded; approved unanimously

Technical Services Forum 2010: Weeding, collection development, and inventory control are the suggested topics.

Cataloging Roundtable: Ted will approach Tom Cohn to be the facilitator. If he is not available, a new facilitator will be needed. This is a valuable program that should be continued.

Technical Services at SCLS: Many libraries are looking for guidance and opportunity for discussion. Perhaps SCLA could provide some of the educational function. The PALS cataloging meeting has been conjoined with acquisitions and serials. Meetings will be held quarterly. Laura Giuliani indicated a policy is required that should be done through PALS. Laura Giuliani will ask Tom Cohn if he is interested.

SCLA Report: Ted attended the dinner annual SCLA dinner on November 20 at Lombardi’s on the Bay. 2010 SCLA officers were announced. The next meeting is in December.

NEWSLETTER: No report. Ted sent a couple of pieces to Tom who is putting the next issue together. The newsletter will include information about opting for the electronic version only. The newsletter will hopefully be available for the annual meeting and will include an announcement that Robert Cognato and Seth McQuaid won the SCLA dinner raffles for the CATS Division.
