Ally announced: We are happy to welcome our NCLA and CLASC, Inc. Liaisons.

President’s Report:

Housekeeping:

Everyone please remember that we are in a professional setting. Be sure you present yourself, your library, and your division/committee well.

If you are unable to make a meeting. Email myself, Carisse, and Patricia to notify us and share your report. We ask that this is done at least 24 hours in advance.

It is also strongly encouraged to attend all SCLA events including game nights and other networking events if possible.

2021 Goals:

Increase awareness of SCLA. Communicate who we are, what we offer, and why Suffolk County library staff should join.
How we are different from SCLS

  • Since we are all using a virtual platform to host events, there is a greater opportunity to increase our participation at meetings. Ideally, all of our numbers for programs should be up since there is no need to request time off work or travel. (Easy to jump on to a meeting, etc)
  • Letting Library Staff know that SCLA is more than just the Division you are part of. Ex: Cats – more than just technology. We should encourage members to attend different meetings and try to show that there is a program/ division for everyone.
  • On that note – we should also be cross advertising programs and SCLA programs at meetings. Ex: promote the next game night at your monthly meeting or program.
  • Increase our membership.
    • Angela is our membership chair and she has done an excellent job. However, increasing membership isn’t exclusively her job. Carisse and I, as well as everyone else, can and should be helping increase membership.
    • Carisse has recently been forwarding the SCLA newsletter along with Game Night invitations to her library staff in an effort to increase membership and interest.
  • Offer our members a professional development series in place of the Long Island Library Conference.
    • If possible, we would like to cosponsor this with NCLA and CLASC, Inc. Possibly in May 2021.
    • Next meeting, please bring back one goal for your division or committee to share with the board.
    • Also, bring feedback on how we can achieve the goals Carisse and I have set for SCLA as a whole.

Treasurer’s Report: The closing balance as of November 2020 was $65,600.30.

LONG ISLAND LIBRARY CONFERENCE:

Long Island Library Conference postponed until 2022

When we were last in touch with you, we were hoping to see you on Thursday, May 13th of 2021 at our annual conference.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we will be able to hold our conference in person in a way that will keep our attendees and vendors safe during the COVID pandemic.  Because of this, the Long Island Library Committee, a joint committee of the Nassau County Library Association and The Suffolk County Library Association, has made the difficult decision to postpone the conference until May 12th of 2022.

While it may seem premature to be making the decision not to hold the conference in May, please understand that the planning required putting together our annual event takes over 10 months.

Aside from outstanding programs, the Long Island Library Conference is known for providing the  opportunity to connect with current and past colleagues, to network, and to establish or strengthen relationships with vendors – all of which our attendees enjoy doing in person.

In addition, the interactive nature of our conference floor makes it almost impossible for us to provide a virtual experience that would come even close to the quality to which you have become accustomed.

We would rather postpone the conference until the following year, giving the public health situation more time to improve, so that we can bring you the quality programs, networking opportunities, and vendors you deserve – in person.

Again, we appreciate your loyalty and are grateful to you for standing with us during this unprecedented time in all our lives. We sincerely hope to see you all, up close and in person, on May 12, 2022.

Rebecca’s goal: Increase communication between myself, Colleen at NYLA, and division treasurers.

 DIVISION REPORTS:

DASL:  Highline presentation had 35 attendees. 7th Annual Herbert Biblo Libraries invitational on April 29 @ 9:45am.

RASD:   The MOSAIC committee has created a Google Sheet with information about Suffolk County library English and literacy classes.  Anyone can edit the sheet to add information about English and literacy classes that their library is hosting.  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1b74gEcYOwAj0OAVdFGYpxLzLhWOY_tNUEIXTRulOGwg/edit?usp=sharing

The next Outreach Committee meeting will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, March 3 at 10:00 am.  The meeting will be held in conjunction with Nassau County’s Outreach Specialist, Shakeema Miller, and librarians from Nassau County.  Representatives from NY Project Hope have also been invited to discuss the services they have available for patrons throughout Long Island in both English and Spanish.

Goal for RASD- increase our student outreach to city and upstate schools.  This outreach would also tie into our professional development series idea; how to build yourself as a new librarian in the field.  And focusing on what to expect at a reference desk that they don’t necessarily teach you in library school.  Specifically on difficult patron situations, outreach concerns, out of the ordinary scenarios.  The Board will discuss details at our March meeting.

CATS:  CATS Goal: Increase the number of programs offered by CATS.

CATS held their February board meeting on February 10. Our primary focus at the meeting was establishing a loose schedule of programs for the year under the assumption they would be remaining virtual for the foreseeable future.

To contribute to the Professional Development Series with NCLA and CLASC we are looking to put together a health and wellness focused program covering fitness and meditation apps as well as some other tech with health tracking capabilities like smartwatches. This would be done either by a representative from NYU/Winthrop (still waiting to hear back) or two of our board members (the more likely outcome).

Looking ahead we have reached out to Scott Jarzombek, the Executive Director of Albany Public Library to host a mid-year seminar. We are still finalizing a topic but they will likely be remote work, AI, or how libraries can/have responded to the pandemic.

We are also looking at additional programs through the summer and early fall including one on keeping virtual program metrics and teaching TinkerCAD to librarians. CATS is sponsoring a Hands-On Podcasting Program submitted by Chris DeCristofaro for NYLA which would be run as a 4-5 hour professional development program.

Outside of programming, CATS is looking to possibly establish a scholarship/sponsorship for a member to attend the upcoming NYLA conference.

SSD:  Scheduling computer classes for June (Social Media) and August (Greeting Cards), Trivia Night, Safety Conference & possible East Meets West program with NCLA SSD.

Programs going on: 2/24/21- Elder abuse program is 2:00 to 3:30pm, 4/20/21- Setting Boundaries program 2-3:30 pm

Next SSD Meeting is March 19th

YASD:  On February 11 we had our February YASD Meeting “YA Adaptive Programming”. Our upcoming March meeting is the annual Fran Romer Memorial Book Talk on March 25 at 10 am. Our special guest speaker is Ryan La Sala.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

ANNUAL DINNER: The SCLA annual dinner is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 6 PM – 10 PM at the Meadowedge at West Sayville Country Club. The DJ (Absolute Entertainment) is paid for and a $500 deposit has been applied to the venue.

A book list of related titles were sent to attendees. On Tuesday, February 16th sixty eight people attended the LGBT 101 workshop presented by the LGBT Network. This event was co-sponsored by LILPA, SCLS, and NLS. Attendees at both of these workshops were sent certificates for one hour of continuing education. A flyer was recently shared for the first LILPA Book Club meeting where we will be discussing the graphic novel Bingo Love by Tee Franklin on Thursday, March 18th. The LILPA Board will be meeting on Monday, February 22nd to discuss future programming. Our goal is to continue to provide education regarding LGBTQ topics for Long Island library as staff. We would also like to create and maintain a social media presence.

For the NYLA 2021 conference, CATS is looking to sponsor two individuals to attend. We are still waiting for further details on the conference itself to decide how comprehensive we want the sponsorship to be, specifically what pricing will be and whether there will be a virtual attendee component or not. LEGISLATIVE:

A budget deal has been finalized and it is overall good news for libraries.

  • Library Aid will be set at $94.1M. This is what we were going to receive in 2020 before the hold backs and adjustments due to the pandemic.  This reverses  the Governor’s proposed 7.5% ($7.1M) cut to library funding.
  • Construction Aid will be set at $34M. This is what we received pre-pandemic and is the same as the highest amount that we have ever received.  It will mean that Suffolk Public Libraries will have approximately $2.1M in construction funding in 2021, up from $890K in 2020.
  • There is also some Bullet Aid in the budget for Senators and Assembly members to grant local entities.
  • There is a new $15M “Digital Inclusion Program” which libraries and library systems will be eligible to apply for but details are still to be worked out.

LI LIBRARY CONFERENCE:  Nothing new to report.

LI LIBRARY CONFERENCE:  Brian Adams reporting:

We met last in person at the Melville Marriott on August 11th. What a pleasure to see each and everyone of the committee members. May we never have to Zoom again!

The 2022 Conference is on and in person – Thursday May 12, 2022.

This year we are trying something new — just one low price for everyone and no early bird pricing.  We hope that keeping the registration fee low encourages more attendees. “Save the Date” flyers are being created and will be sent out soon.

Those divisions and committees that have already submitted programs (from 2 years ago) have been contacted and offered to keep the same programs and same time slots wherever possible.

Another issue we are still having and has now increased in urgency  is the lack of transparency and detail for the Long Island Library Conference’s finances.  I have asked over the years for NYLA to keep a “separate” sheet for the finances of the Long Island Library Conference, and it has still not been done.

We have reached a tipping point and need for NYLA to make this happen.  What can SCLA do to make this happen please ?

LILPA: The Long Island Library Pride Alliance Board met on July 26th. They discussed their two upcoming workshops and started to discuss and create a list for a Mock Stonewall program currently scheduled for December 16th. Last year this mock award was sent out as a Google form. This year LILPA is looking to hold it virtually as a workshop that will include live discussions with voting. The flyers and registration information for both Rising to the Challenge on September 14th and LILPA Book Club: Alice Isn’t Dead by Joseph Fink were shared with the membership and the SCLA/NCLA listservs. Zoom links for both meetings will be sent closer to the dates of the programs.

At the Annual Dinner 2 years ago, we raffled off gift baskets that were donated by the different divisions, and personally donated, to raise money for the SCLA Scholarship and the Continuing Ed Award – it worked out really well and I would love to do that again this year.  If anyone is willing to donate a basket please reach out to me in the next few weeks: emma@bbplibrary.org or 631-363-6133 ext. 20. Thank you!

STUDENT OUTREACH: Shared flyers to schools for SCLA scholarships and CLASC events.  Sending job postings from Derek to grad schools as well.  Reached out to St. John’s Queens and LIU to possibly host another webinar or in person informational SCLA event.  Will keep everyone updated.  Feel free to send me anything you would like shared with local library school students. cnavins@smithlib.org

RASD: Rachel Cecchini reported:

NYLA is requesting that anyone who would like to plan an event that requires payment or, if CEUs are being given, to give them at least 6-8 weeks notice.  Due to short staffing and the upcoming conference, there have been significant delays in communication between our division and NYLA.  Because of this, the annual luncheon and Health Concerns Committee Breakfast have had to be rescheduled.  More information will follow once the new dates have been confirmed with the guest speakers.

RASD is looking for a Historian and someone to be a co-chair on our Media Committee.  If you know of anyone who would be interested, please have them reach out to me at: rcecchini@smithlib.org

LILPA: Derek Ivie reported via email:

The Long Island Library Alliance held a meeting called Rising to the Challenge on Tuesday, September 14th. Twenty four library staff members from both Nassau and Suffolk counties attended the workshop. Kristen Pekoll, the Assistant Director at the Office for Intellectual Freedom, spoke to the group about how ALA’s OIF can aid libraries when books, programs, etc. at their libraries have been challenged. She stressed the importance of the Library Bill of Rights, the Library Code of Ethics, and how having an updated collection development, selection, and reconsideration policies is imperative. Pekoll also shared useful resources for libraries to use before, during, and after a challenge. Coming up, the LILPA Book Club will be meeting on Tuesday, October 12th. The group will be discussing Joseph Fink’s Alice Isn’t Dead.

The Scholarship Committee has selected the recipient of the SCLA Scholarship.  We potentially have one applicant for the Continuing Ed Award – the deadline was Wednesday and at this time I only have half of a complete application.

At the Annual Dinner in 2019, we raffled off gift baskets that were donated by the different divisions, and personally donated, to raise money for the SCLA Scholarship and the Continuing Ed Award – it worked out really well and I would love to do that again this year.  If anyone is willing to donate a basket please reach out to me: emma@bbplibrary.org or 631-363-6133 ext. 20. LI LIBRARY CONFERENCE:  Brian Adams reported.

We had a meeting early November, planning the 2022 conference, torn about what will be happening with COVID in the future. A poll was sent to Nassau and Suffolk Directors about having the conference in person & whether they would allow their staff to attend– indicated in poll that there will be social distancing & lower # of attendees. The next meeting is on December 9th, a decision has to be made about the conference December 31st/January 1st. The Marriott Hotel currently has no COVID restrictions.

 LILPA: Derek Ivie reported.

For the month of November the Long Island Library Pride Alliance did not hold a meeting for members, but rather, sent small tokens of gratitude to anyone in both Suffolk and Nassau who attended a meeting in the last year and a half. They each received a thank you note and two LILPA themed buttons. Youth Services staff members also received the comic Lights, Camera… Identity from the Pop Culture Hero Coalition. These comics were donated to LILPA by Stefanie Gangone from Copiague Memorial Library. These packages should be arriving within the next week. The board met twice, on October 18th and November 15th. They have been finalizing details for the Mock Stonewall Award Workshop scheduled to take place on Thursday, December 16th. A memo with the chosen titles was released last month. Registration is open!

LDA AWARD:  Paula Bornstein reported via email.

NCLA will lead preparations for the 2022 LDA Library Award competition, with distribution of paper and electronic application forms beginning in January. I will need a set of SCLA member mailing labels for the paper forms. In discussion with the two NCLA LDA Award chairpeople, I found out that they work together each year, splitting their responsibilities, in order to improve their search for candidates. They suggested that SCLA do the same. This also would enable us to train another individual to take on all necessary tasks.

LEGISLATIVE:  Samantha Alberts reported via email.
