Legislation
The Legislation Committee is charged with promoting libraries and library systems to our New York State legislators and making them aware of the continuing need for our fair share of the annual state budget.
Toward this goal SCLA and LILRC jointly sponsor an annual legislative breakfast, to which all Suffolk representatives to the NYS legislature are invited. All members of the library community are invited as well. At this time we informally lobby our state representatives.
In February, as the state budget is being formulated, the SCLA legislation committee hires a bus, makes preparations to go to Albany, and joins NYLA representatives from all over the State on Library Legislation Day (now the second Tuesday in February). LILRC arranges appointments with legislators to which we go in groups.
The results of these efforts, the breakfast, Albany lobbying and reception, are cumulative. Our legislators know who we are and what we want.
LDA Award
The Library Directory Associates (LDA) Award is a bi-county award which is currently sponsored by Long Island's Suffolk and Nassau Library Associations. The award founder and original sponsor is LDA (Library Directory Associates) under the direction of Andrew Ippolito. The first award was given in 1978, and continues to be presented each year at the Long Island Library Conference.
The purpose of the LDA Award is to provide recognition to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to libraries on Long Island. A panel of judges from SCLA and NCLA selects a winner based on the criteria outlined in the LDA Call For Nominations Brochure. The brochure contains a nomination form to register your candidate, and detailed specifics on how to submit the information to the current chairperson.
Each year the position of Chairperson and Co-Chairperson alternates between counties. The current year association President appoints a person to chair (co-chair) the committee. Current status and updates on the LDA Award progress are reported at the association's monthly Executive Board Meetings.
