Scholarship

The Suffolk County Library Association, serving Suffolk County libraries since 1939, offers an academic scholarship to assist an outstanding library school student in subsidizing the cost of their library school education, and to promote the profession by supporting an excellent student pursuing a Library or Information Science Master’s Degree in Suffolk County.

Excellence in Library Service Award (ELSA)

Purpose:
The ELSA is designed to recognize dedication to public service demonstrated by any staff member of a public, school, special or academic library. We welcome nominations submitted by any employee of a Suffolk County library or any Suffolk County library patron.

Eligibility:
Pages, clerks, librarians and trainees, as well as office, custodial and security staff from any Suffolk County library are eligible.

To Qualify:
The nominee must work at least 17.5 hours per week, and have worked a minimum of one year in his/her current position. People who have been nominated in the past may be nominated again.

Criteria:
Outstanding public service may be demonstrated by fostering team spirit, exemplary job performance, promoting good will among patrons and staff, or an innovative approach to one’s work.

How to nominate a colleague:
Complete the nomination form., an Adobe Acrobat document.
Write a nomination of between 250 and 500 words which explains the impact the nominee has had on his/her library. (In order to insure impartiality, please refer to the nominee as “nominee” and their library as “library.”)
Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from co-workers and/or patrons.

Continuing Education Award for Library Support Staff
The SCLA Continuing Education Award for Library Support Staff is a minimum cash award made to a library employee who is pursuing academic or career-related coursework that will enhance and contribute to their library duties, as well as benefit libraries. The award is supported by the Suffolk County Library Association and is activities, individual contributions and commemorative gifts. It is administered by the SCLA Scholarship Committee whose decisions are final. It is an annual award, but if the Committee finds no suitable candidate in a given year, no award will be made.

Library Directory Associates Award (LDA)
Purpose:
The LDA Award provides recognition to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to libraries on Long Island. By honoring the winner we honor all the people who contribute to the profession.

Eligibility:
Librarians, trustees, support staff, friends of the library, vendors and publishers.

What To Do:
Fill out the nomination form an Adobe Acrobat document, and send it back with your nomination packet.
Prepare a nominating statement of approximately 500 words that describe the accomplishments of your candidate and why he or she is worthy of consideration for the LDA award. The Award Committee may not know this individual, so be clear and specific, but not elaborate in your presentation.
The three letters of support which accompany this statement in your packet of information should not be submitted by persons affiliated with the nominating agency.
The letters should address the six criteria listed above. The scoring will be based on how well the criteria was addressed by each candidate.
Submit six (6) copies of all documentation.
