Fran Romer Memorial Teen Services Workshop

fran romer imageFran Romer was a Young Adult Librarian at the Northport-East Northport Public Library, but her influence has been felt by teens and librarians throughout the county- in large part through her work on the Executive Board of the Young Adult Services Division (YASD) of the Suffolk County Library Association (SCLA).

The Fourth Annual Fran Romer Memorial Teen Services Workshop was held on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Harborfields Public Library. The workshop theme was Teens and the Characters They Love: Celebrating Series Books for Teens.

Our Keynote Speaker was Stacy L. Creel, professor at St. John's University, VOYA Editor and 2009 Printz Award Committee Member. Stacy spoke about the comfort and pleasure teens find in reading series books, including the familiarity of the setting, plot, character/personality, writing style and format, etc. while providing examples of popular series books. Stacy also discussed the often heard complaints about series books, as well as the many perks about series books.

Our guest booktalker was Lorraine Squires, Head of Teen Services at Mastic-Moriches-Shirley Community Library and VOYA Paperback Series Roundup columnist. With keen insight and humor, Lorraine skillfully booktalked series books by themes, including The Young The Rich The Fabulous, Back in the Real World, Supernaturally Awesome, School Daze, Spy Kids, and more. Librarians will surely be adding some of her booktalk titles to their collections!
