The Long Island Library Conference (LILC) was held on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Crest Hollow Country Club. This year's conference theme was "Go Green at Your Library." For program information, speaker handouts, pictures and more, visit the LILC website. In addition to arranging a guest speaker during the conference, YASD also presented the B.E.S.T. Award to a distinguished teen in Suffolk County.
Suffolk YASD's guest speaker was Jack Martin, Assistant Director for Young Adult Programs at the New York Public Library (NYPL). Mr. Martin spoke about the topic "By Teens, for Teens: Out of the Box Programming." During his engaging presentation, Mr. Martin shared examples of out of the box programming at NYPL, including an Anti-Prom, "Turn it UP! @ the Library" podcasting and a multi-session video game design workshop based on building an awareness of life skills and world issues.
Resources mentioned during Mr. Martin's presentation:
Roger Hart's Ladder of Young People's Participation
Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets
Anti-prom 2008 video
Turn it UP! @ the Library
