The Learning Connection for Adult Education, Inc.<\/strong>
\nThe CSJ Learning Connection for Adult Education is a private non-profit educational and job training program sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, NY. It aims to provide the tools for the empowerment of people who are undereducated, speak languages other than English or are in need of job skills. In a multicultural, non-competitive setting, participants follow the course of study suited to their needs, abilities and personal goals. The Brentwood School District and the Brentwood Library became aware of the significance and contribution of the Learning Connection and now it is considered an off-campus site of the Adult Literacy Program.<\/em><\/p>\n

Non-traditional Education<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

This is an approach to learning not conforming to conventional standards. Methods are established for obtaining an education with limited formal classroom attendance.<\/em><\/p>\n

Distance Learning<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Distance Learning is a term that encompasses all learning that takes place at locations remote from the point of instruction. Examples include cable television, the Internet, satellite classes, videotapes and correspondence study. Some libraries have partnerships with Western Suffolk BOCES enabling them to provide online courses to users at a reduced cost. Contact your local library to determine if it has a partnership with BOCES.<\/em><\/p>\n

New York State Department of Labor Apprenticeship<\/strong>
\nTraining offers candidates an opportunity to learn a skilled occupation through paid on-the-job training and classroom education. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years of age or 16 with parental approval. The length of the training may vary from 1-6 years depending upon the occupation. High School Equivalency Testing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

TASC<\/strong> – Test Assessing Secondary Completion (replaces GED) test is for adults who did not graduate from high school. The TASC test is the new National High School Equivalency Exam. \n<\/b>When applying for unemployment benefits, file a claim during the first week of unemployment, as a delay may cost benefits. Benefits may be received through Direct Deposit or through an Unemployment Insurance debit card. It takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks to receive the first payment.
