Reader’s Advisory Committee meeting Thursday, September 28 at 9:30 am

The Reader’s Advisory Committee was established in June 1998 with a total of fourteen members from twelve libraries. Grace O’Connor started and chaired the committee from 1998 through 2014 when she retired from the West Islip Public Library then handed the reins over to me in 2015. The purpose of the committee is to provide reader’s advisory assistance to fellow librarians on various genres. We meet three times a year and each meeting is dedicated to a different genre with the members providing a brief annotation as well as read-a-likes for their chosen book; those annotations are then published on the Reader’s Advisory blog: http://rasdreadersadvisory.blogspot.com/. Some of the genres we’ve covered since 2015 are short stories, sports, science-fiction, biography, culinary fiction, non-fiction that reads like fiction and mystery. Books that are chosen must be published within the last five years and as our blog posts become out-of-date, we’ll revisit an older genre in order to update it.

The committee currently has eleven members each from a different library, but we’re always looking for more people to join and spread the love of books. We meet at SCLS on the last Thursday of the month in January, April and September from 10 am-12 pm with coffee/tea at 9:30 am. If you’d like to join the committee, please contact me at aagnello@wbpl.us.
