SCLA SSD 2020 Safety Conference

This year the SCLA Support Staff Division’s 2020 Safety Conference will be virtual!

We have several programs over the month of October to inform and entertain:

October 6, 2020 – Connections in COVID/Jessica Price, Social Worker

2-3:30pm (1 CEU)

During this time of transitions and challenges, empathy for others and ourselves is even more important than ever. Social worker Jessica Price has been incorporating empathy awareness into her elementary guidance plan for years. In doing so, she began to realize how much of what she was working on with young people in regards to empathy was relevant for all ages. Learning to embrace empathy and share our stories in a way that others can connect to is a lifelong objective. With so many new obstacles in our way to connect with others in spite of social distancing, this hour will be focused on reconnection during COVID. We can show kindness amidst the masks, stress, and frustrations that we are facing today.

October 16, 2020 – Catfishing and Financial Scam 2-3:30pm (1.5 CEUs)

Catfishing — when a person creates a fake identity online to pretend they are someone else- is an online abuse tactic used to take advantage of another individual. Catfishes target vulnerable online users- like the elderly or lonely- and quickly take control of their finances. Join VIBS as we explore the intersect of catfishing and financial abuse and discuss the ways to keep yourself safe in an increasingly virtual world.

October 19, 2020 – LGBTQIA+ Abuse: Exploring Risk Factors and Protective Factors  2-3:30pm (1.5 CEUs)

LGBTQA+ individuals experience much higher rates of abuse, particularly intimate partner violence, because they have a unique set of risk factors that cause them to be an extra vulnerable population. Organizations, schools, community centers and even families can offset these risk factors by focusing on protective factors that can help prevent the abuse from starting. Join VIBS as we dissect the risk factors and protective factors that impact the LGBTQIA+ community.
