SSD Annual Membership Meeting

On June 8, 2011, the SSD hosted an EXCEL Training Class in the new Training Room at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System.   All twenty-four seats were filled and each participant had access to their own computer for an informative, hands-on experience.  Angela, from Sharper Training Solutions, took the group step-by-step into the workings of Microsoft EXCEL 2007 providing the logic  and steps behind each function.   I felt that the two hours flew by leaving me eager for the next level of training!

“Sharpen Your Memory, Sharpen Your Mind” was the presentation sponsored by the Support Staff Division of SCLA.  Barbara Feinstein, MLS guided us on how to live healthy, happy and full lives with humor and practical tips.  Over 160 attended the the presentation and received a handout of the workshop.

The Support Staff Division conducted a free raffle for a beautiful basket full of items to help one relax and wind down after a hectic day at the Conference.  Thanks go to Ceil Prevete for designing the basket.  Our winner was Brian Roach of the South Huntington Public Library.

 

The SSD Annual Roundtable was  a success well attended by clerical plus business and adminstrative staff!  Suggested topics were Sky River, ILLs, Self check-ins/outs, RFID, Social Networking to name a few.  We had intended to have attendees switch seats to mix it up a bit but everyone was so engrossed in conversation we didn’t want to disturb them!  Is this an idea to try for next year?  It was wonderful to take part in the exchange of ideas and information between colleagues of the library world!

We wish to thank the Sachem Public Library for providing the venue for such a successful Roundtable experience.  Please feel free to suggest topics for next year’s event in the comment section below.  Also, check out the photos in our Flickr slideshow.

Library Assistant / Technician Training Program

One-Week Course
This certificate, non-credit program is sponsored by NYLA in cooperation with Genesee Community College. It is open to individuals already working or newly hired in libraries, or people interested in working in libraries. To receive a certificate from GCC, the individual must complete the entire 18 hour program.

 Introduction
A survey of libraries, from their beginnings in pre-history to the dynamic institutions they are today. This section introduces students who plan to or are currently working in libraries to the various aspects of library work, to the functions of a library, and to the distinctive role of the library assistant/technician. Attention is given to the development of libraries so that the student may be aware of what a library is, how it has evolved, and what types are found today. The current employment situation is also discussed. This section includes an overview of all library areas and includes Public/Circulation Services, Reference, and Technical Services.

 Public / Circulation Services
An introduction to public services in libraries. This section includes circulation services and systems, reserve and special collections, shelving and stack maintenance, customer service, public relations, confidentiality and security.

 Reference

An introduction to reference and information services in libraries. Topics include the organization of information, the reference question, and search strategies. Electronic reference products, trends in reference work, library/bibliographic instruction, information literacy, and types of reference materials are discussed. The role of the library technician in this aspect of library service is explored.

Technical Services

An overview of the technical processing services that are carried out in libraries to ensure the growth, development, and bibliographic control of all collections of materials. Students will be introduce to the procedures required to acquire, catalog, process, and preserve materials in all formats. This section will also consider the impact computers have had on the technical services of libraries.
