SSD 2014 LILC Program Very Successful!
The 2014 Long Island Library Conference was very interesting, entertaining and informative. The SSD program, “Workplace Safety in the Library,” was well attended with over 50 attendees. We want to thank Matthew Setteducati of the NYS Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau (PESH) for providing valuable information and resources for the attendees to bring back to their libraries. The audience was very engaged and asked pertinent questions during the presentation. All the information is available on the PESH website: https://labor.ny.gov/workerprotection/safetyhealth/DOSH_PESH.shtm
The SSD table had numerous visitors during the course of the Conference resulting in all give aways being dispersed! Our lucky winner of the Go Bag & Teddy Bear donated by the American Red Cross was Adele Fitz of the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library. Our thanks go to Celia Vollmer of the Brentwood Public Library for arranging the American Red Cross donation.

2014 SSD ANNUAL ROUNDTABLE A HIT!
The SSD Annual Roundtable held on March 25, 2014 at the Brentwood Public Library proved to be entertaining and insightful! Neva Hacker from Employees Assistance Program (EAP) conducted an exercise of Hands-ON Team Building which involved all attendees. Each attendee picked a puzzle piece from a bag and then gathered with the other participants who picked the same pattern puzzle pieces – these became the teams. Neva explained the goal and gave the rules for completing the task of completing five puzzles from the materials in the PRESENT. All participants gained valuable insight into themselves and others as they worked as a team to complete the task.
We had three lucky raffle winners:
Bag of Puzzles Raffle was won by Ciel Prevete of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library
Two tickets to the SCLA Annual Fall Dinner were won by Elma Lugo of the Longwood Public Library
The 50-50 was won by Rose Rodzevik of the Hauppauge Public Library
Our thanks to Tom Tarantowicz, Director of the Brentwood Public Library and the the Brentwood Library staff for their gracious hospitality!
Check our Flickr feed for photos of the Annual Roundtable.

Microsoft Advanced PUBLISHER Class
On October 30, 2013, SSD sponsored the Microsoft Advanced PUBLISHER Class at SCLS conducted by Sharper Training Solutions. We had a great turn-out for this class! The class focused on graphics in publications, table of contents , and creating Master Pages. The participants were able to ask specific questions regarding projects they were involved in at work and receive some one-on-one attention. Everyone who attended the training left with several tips or ideas to bring back to their libraries to improve their in-house publications. As an added bonus, by attending the class, all participants are able to contact Sharper Training Solutions for future support on any Microsoft PUBLISHER function and access the training manuals on the Sharper Training Solutions website.
Keep on eye out for future free classes in 2014!
Inspiring Annual Membership Meeting!
At the SSD Annual Membership Meeting held at Half Hollow Hills Community Library/Dix Hills on October 24th, Tara Costa (Biggest Loser Finalist and 2X Ironman) gave an inspiring, informative and entertaining presentation to help the audience achieve their personal goals. Tara’s techniques and tips were applicable whether your goal was weight loss, career oriented or improvement of your personal life. Tara used personal examples as well as humor to get her message across to the delight of our participants. After her presentation, Tara was gracious and posed for photos with our participants.
