Learn how to video chat with loved ones. Students will learn how to set up and use Skype video chat as well as Apple’s Facetime and instant messaging apps. Bring your questions and your device if you have one.

COMPUTER CLEANUP AND SECURITY – May 27th from 1-2:30pm

In this lecture and demo class, students will learn how to clean up their Windows computer, improve performance and speed up tasks, protect it from viruses and spyware, and much more.  Prerequisites: For intermediate and advanced users

SSD CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

The SCLA Support Staff Division is looking for nominations for all Board positions.  Please look over the descriptions below and consider filling one of these important roles in our Division.

PRESIDENT (1)
It shall be the duty of the SSD President to preside at all meetings and to enforce all laws and regulations relating to the administration of the organization.
The SSD President shall be empowered to order meetings of the Division’s Executive Board when he/she deems such a meeting to be necessary. Division Board Members and constituents may request an unscheduled meeting to be held by forwarding a request in writing to the SSD President. Granting the request for such a meeting will be solely at the President’s discretion.
The SSD President shall appoint chairpersons of standing committees and shall be ex-officio member of all committees except for the Election Committee.
The SSD President, or an appointed representative, shall attend the Executive Board meetings of the Suffolk County Library Association.
VICE PRESIDENT / PRESIDENT-ELECT (1)
In absence of the SSD President, the SSD Vice President shall have all of the powers and prerogatives of the SSD President.
The SSD Vice President shall serve as the President-Elect and will serve as President in the year following service as Vice President.
SECRETARY (1)
All resolutions and proceedings of meetings shall be entered in proper books by the Secretary. The Secretary shall conduct all correspondence, shall issue all notices of meetings, and shall perform all duties pertaining to the office of Secretary. The Secretary shall keep a register of all members of the Division.
TREASURER (1)
The SSD Treasurer works as a liaison between SSD and NYLA, submitting expense/reimbursement requests and deposits to NYLA’s finance department for approval.
Keeps organized digital and physical copies of all relevant treasury documents, including receipts, expense and deposit forms, statements etc.
Confirms and verifies monthly account statements from NYLA’s finance department.  
MEMBER-AT-LARGE (2)
The duties of a Member-at-Large will be to assist the Officers of the Board with programs, membership and other committee work as it arises.

2019 SSD 4th ANNUAL SAFETY CONFERENCE a HUGE SUCCESS!!

The SSD Annual Membership Meeting and 4th Annual Safety Conference was a huge success!  Over 50 participants attended the event which was held at the Brentwood Public Library on Friday, December 5th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

 

Stuart Cameron, Chief of Department of the Suffolk County Police Dept.,  was our Keynote Speaker. Chief Cameron updated the audience on the ever evolving tactics and programs to protect our schools regarding active shooter events.  Chief Cameron critiqued past incidences of active shooters with video and audio explaining what the Suffolk county Police Department learned form these events and how they incorporated their findings to improve SCPD’s response and techniques to handle these situations.

 

The Libraries Roles in Preparedness and Community Resiliency, was presented by Valerie Lewis, Suffolk Cooperative Library System and covered the important role of the public library in the safety of its community.  The library can provide crucial safety information to its patrons and participate in community efforts during times of crisis.

 

 

The Importance of Empathy in Everyday Interaction, presented by Jessica Price, School Counselor of Brentwood School District, was an interactive program of sharing feelings and stories of empathy from the audience.

 

 

 

 

 

Mind-Body-Spirit Martial Arts Self Defense was another audience participation event conducted by Gene Perceval & Dan Perceval,  which had our attendees practicing self defense moves on one another!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2019-2020 Winter Weather Outlook,and National Weather Service Forecast and Preparedness was presented Nelson Vaz, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, National Weather Service and let the audience know that winter is coming!

 

Narcan Training was the last topic of the day presented by Thomas Fealey, Deputy Chief of Operations Suffolk County Department of Health.  After the training all attendees received a Narcan Kit to have on hand in case of an overdose event in their library.

 

 

 

 

The SCLA Support Staff Division would like to thank Tom Tarantowicz, Director of the Brentwood Public Library, for hosting our event; for his consistent support of SSD and thank you to his wonderful, helpful staff.

 

 

 

2019 Long Island Library Conference Highlights

Another productive and entertaining Long Island Library Conference has provided attendees with important insights and information to bring back to their home libraries.

To accomplish this, the leaders need to have the ability to inspire and motivate those around them to become enthusiastic followers who are committed to achieving the Libraries Vision.This workshop will help participants identify the characteristics of visionary leaders. They will examine how leaders can lose their vision and develop strategies for maintaining visionary leadership with their staff.
