2019 SSD 4th ANNUAL SAFETY CONFERENCE a HUGE SUCCESS!!
The SSD Annual Membership Meeting and 4th Annual Safety Conference was a huge success! Over 50 participants attended the event which was held at the Brentwood Public Library on Friday, December 5th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Stuart Cameron, Chief of Department of the Suffolk County Police Dept., was our Keynote Speaker. Chief Cameron updated the audience on the ever evolving tactics and programs to protect our schools regarding active shooter events. Chief Cameron critiqued past incidences of active shooters with video and audio explaining what the Suffolk county Police Department learned form these events and how they incorporated their findings to improve SCPD’s response and techniques to handle these situations.
The Libraries Roles in Preparedness and Community Resiliency, was presented by Valerie Lewis, Suffolk Cooperative Library System and covered the important role of the public library in the safety of its community. The library can provide crucial safety information to its patrons and participate in community efforts during times of crisis.
The Importance of Empathy in Everyday Interaction, presented by Jessica Price, School Counselor of Brentwood School District, was an interactive program of sharing feelings and stories of empathy from the audience.
Mind-Body-Spirit Martial Arts Self Defense was another audience participation event conducted by Gene Perceval & Dan Perceval, which had our attendees practicing self defense moves on one another!
2019-2020 Winter Weather Outlook,and National Weather Service Forecast and Preparedness was presented Nelson Vaz, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, National Weather Service and let the audience know that winter is coming!
Narcan Training was the last topic of the day presented by Thomas Fealey, Deputy Chief of Operations Suffolk County Department of Health. After the training all attendees received a Narcan Kit to have on hand in case of an overdose event in their library.

2019 Long Island Library Conference Highlights

They will examine how leaders can lose their vision and develop strategies for maintaining visionary leadership with their staff. Participants will also learn how to tap into each staff member’s greatest potential to enable them to become strong partners in the development of their library.
