2019 SSD 4th ANNUAL SAFETY CONFERENCE a HUGE SUCCESS!!

The SSD Annual Membership Meeting and 4th Annual Safety Conference was a huge success!  Over 50 participants attended the event which was held at the Brentwood Public Library on Friday, December 5th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

 

Stuart Cameron, Chief of Department of the Suffolk County Police Dept.,  was our Keynote Speaker. Chief Cameron updated the audience on the ever evolving tactics and programs to protect our schools regarding active shooter events.  Chief Cameron critiqued past incidences of active shooters with video and audio explaining what the Suffolk county Police Department learned form these events and how they incorporated their findings to improve SCPD’s response and techniques to handle these situations.

 

The Libraries Roles in Preparedness and Community Resiliency, was presented by Valerie Lewis, Suffolk Cooperative Library System and covered the important role of the public library in the safety of its community.  The library can provide crucial safety information to its patrons and participate in community efforts during times of crisis.

 

 

The Importance of Empathy in Everyday Interaction, presented by Jessica Price, School Counselor of Brentwood School District, was an interactive program of sharing feelings and stories of empathy from the audience.

 

 

 

 

 

Mind-Body-Spirit Martial Arts Self Defense was another audience participation event conducted by Gene Perceval & Dan Perceval,  which had our attendees practicing self defense moves on one another!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2019-2020 Winter Weather Outlook,and National Weather Service Forecast and Preparedness was presented Nelson Vaz, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, National Weather Service and let the audience know that winter is coming!

 

Narcan Training was the last topic of the day presented by Thomas Fealey, Deputy Chief of Operations Suffolk County Department of Health.  After the training all attendees received a Narcan Kit to have on hand in case of an overdose event in their library.

2018 SSD 3rd ANNUAL SAFETY CONFERENCE a HUGE SUCCESS!!

The SSD Annual Membership Meeting and 3rd Annual Safety Conference was a huge success!  Over 50 participants attended the event which was held at the Brentwood Public Library on Wednesday, October 17th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

Lee Mandel, CEO of Intralogic Solutions, gave a presentation of his product that links all building alarm systems together making them more efficient and quicker – a lock down in 15 seconds as opposed to 15 minutes! Intralogic Solutions also sponsored the refreshments served at the Conference. 

Stuart Cameron, Chief of Department of the Suffolk County Police Dept.,  was our Keynote Speaker. He spoke about the Smart 9-1-1 for Facilities: the RAVE panic button application that library staff are using to report active shooter, medical emergency, 911 calls; the shield program; results of the Department of Justice law suit compliance (today’s top Newsday story); and the public feeling comfortable calling 911 to report crimes/gang activity.

Nicole Marks, MEP, CEM, NYS Homeland Security and Emergency Services for Long Island, gave an overview on Continuity Of Operations Plan (COOP) which is the next phase of planning for a disaster.

Matthew Setteducati, Supervising Safety & Health Inspector, PESH, covered how to be compliant with the NYS Workplace Violence Law. PESH has consultants ready to help you develop your policy and become compliant with this very important safeguard for your staff.

Jessica Price, School Counselor, Brentwood School District, provided strategies to incorporate EMPATHY into our everyday interactions and shared how these strategies are working in the Brentwood School District..

 

 

Stephanie Sloan, MS, CASCA, Senior Drug Abuse Educator, Suffolk County Division of Community Mental Hygiene Services, provided a NARCAN training session and kits for all participants. to help combat the rising incidents of opioid overdose.

Nicole Marks of NYS Homeland Security returned in the afternoon with Patrick Beckley and Jillian Ringhauser to conduct a workshop on developing an Emergency Operations Plan for your library.  The participants broke up into three groups and step by step developed an Emergency Operations Plan for their “library” based on a scenario given to the group. SSD 2nd ANNUAL SAFETY CONFERENCE 2017

 

The SSD Annual Membership Meeting and 2nd Safety Conference was a huge success!  Over 60 people attended the event which was held at the Brentwood Public Library on Wednesday, October 18th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Tim Sini, Suffolk County Police Department Commissioner, was our Keynote Speaker and addressed the opioid crisis, community relations and the lower crime rate in Suffolk County. Patrick Beckley, Regional Director NYS Homeland Security and Emergency Services for Long Island, gave an update on emergencies that have occurred so far in 2017 and the improvements to equipment and procedures that have been put in place. Intralogic Solutions also sponsored the lunch served at the Conference.  SCPD P.O. Raymond Sitler addressed the topic of Autism and other mental health conditions and how to respond to a crisis involving a patron with one of these health issues.  SCPD Police Officers John Wright, Peter Rivera and Eiffel Ramirez informed the attendees on community liaison and its importance to the community.  The Officers encouraged all libraries to reach out to their precinct COPE officers and develop programs together to address each community’s needs.  And our last presenters of the day, Christopher Kandell and Adam Kuemmel of the NYS Board of Health Sanitation, explained proper food handling to prevent the spread of disease.  FIOS 1 News was on hand to tape the conference: http://www.fios1news.com/longisland/local-lockdown-security-conference-oct-18-2017#.WeodgztryUk


2016 SSD SAFETY FAIR

The SCLA Support Staff Division hosted their inaugural Safety Fair at the Brentwood Public Library on October 5, 2016. There were presenters from Homeland Security Statewide Resiliency Initiative, School Safety for Schools and Outside Educational Institutions, SCPD Community Policing, Citizen’s Preparedness Corps, LISPAN, and tables hosting volunteer organizations: Suffolk county Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Long Island Cares, SCPD Civilian Academy, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, LI Housing Partnership and the Brentwood Bay Shore Breast Cancer Coalition.
