Hearing the trauma stories of others or even within the community can take an emotional and physical toll on staff and those we serve. In this training, we identify the common signs of vicarious trauma through a diverse and culturally competent lens. Participants will explore what trauma triggers feel like in the mind and body, with best practices for self-care, as well as tips to support those dealing with stress and trauma.

The Action of Inaction: Library Neutrality in the Wake of Social Justice – What does neutrality mean in libraries, and who does it serve? During this session we will explore and identify neutral actions that libraries have taken, what actions libraries have taken against neutrality, and what that means for the community and the profession. Mahasin Ameen is currently an Assistant Librarian at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. She started her library journey at the Capital Area District Library in her hometown of Lansing, Michigan and has worked in public and academic libraries. Her research focuses on equity and access to library services for marginalized people, neutrality, intergenerational librarianship, and the history of Black librarianship.

Cognitive Behavioral Techniques for Working with Children, Adolescents, & Young Adults with Behavioral Issues in the Library

On behalf of the Stony Brook Medicine Healthy Libraries Program, Dr. Adria Gerber, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University will present cognitive behavioral techniques to work with children, teens, and young adults with behavioral issues in the libraries.  The program will educate on the cognitive triangle of emotion: specifically focusing on the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; and how these three parts of our emotional system impact our interactions.  Through this increased awareness, Dr. Gerber will explore behavioral issues shared by librarians, providing examples of cognitive behavioral interventions, coping skills, and emotional regulation strategies that can be modeled to help reinforce healthy emotional behaviors for children, teens, and young adults.
