Bills Reimbursed in January/February:
Laura Panter SCLA Meeting 1/17 – 11.68
Laura Panter Villa Lombardi’s SCLA Annual Dinner Deposit 1/17 – 1,000.00
Long Island Library Conference Registration Materials 2/2/14 – 354.64
Long Island Library Conference Bags 1/23/14 – 1857.48
Marsha Greenspan Hospitality for SCLA Civil Service Workshop 2/4- 112.64
Advocacy Day Reimbursement to NCLA 2/20/14 – 700.00
Jose reported his notes from Galina:
Galina says that Division Presidents, President or Treasurer’s should either Fax a reimbursement form with the receipt to NYLA OR Mail it, but not both. She has ended up with doubles because they were faxed and mailed and she inadvertantly sends two reimbursement checks. What I plan on doing then is faxing them and periodically sending her an e-mail confirming her receipt of the reimbursements. I’ll keep copies of all originals here in Brentwood unless I should do otherwise.
She usually sends Financial Reports on the 16th of each month with the exception of the NYLA Conference when things get a little hectic. But she let me know that I can call her in advance to prepare them earlier.
The new mileage reimbursement is .56 cents a mile, according to the IRS.
She said she would send me deposit slips (I’m not sure what they are, maybe she meant reimbursement sheets?).
Division presidents should still send reimbursement requests to NYLA but keep in mind that Galina requests that forms be either Faxed or Mailed (with original receipts if they are to be mailed). Board members and committee members (Not Division Presidents) should still continue to send reimbursement requests to Jose-Rodrigo Hernandez C/O Brentwood Public Library 34 Second Ave, Brentwood, NY 11717 and/or e-mail Reimbursement forms and relevant documents to 19josehernandez86@gmail.com. Sending reimbursement forms through the System bag is also acceptable. Board Members and Committee members will need a treasurer signature in order to receive reimbursement.
Jose Hernandez moved to pay the bills as presented. Sara Bedell seconded the motion. None opposed. Motion passed.
OLD BUSINESS: Jackie Narkiewicz reported. She encourages everyone to attend Advocacy Day on Wednesday, February 26 and POST-advocacy day, on Thursday, February 27.
NEW BUSINESS: Jackie Narkiewicz reported. She opened a discussion regarding ideas to increase membership. Joanne Albano & Kim Zettwoch will create a video showing the steps to renew/sign up for SCLA/NYLA.
Laura Panter adjourned the meeting at 11:24 a.m.
The next meeting will be Friday, March 21, 2014 at SCLS. Refreshments at 9:30 a.m., meeting 10:00 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,

CALL TO ORDER: Laura Panter called the “March Bring a Friend” board meeting to order at 10:06 a.m. Presidents and committee chairs introduced themselves and their colleagues who were interested in learning about SCLA. The February 2014 minutes were reviewed and corrected. Teri Hatred moved to accept the minutes as corrected. Sara Bedell seconded the motion. None were opposed. Motion passed.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Jackie Narkiewicz reported. Jackie thanked Samantha Alberts for all her work for NYLA’s Advocacy Day. She mentioned how registration started for the Long Island Library Conference and encourages everyone to attend.
NYLA REPORT: Joanne Albano reported by email. There was a NYLA Council Conference call on Thursday, March 20th, she stated the following:
NYLA President Sarah Kelly Johns will be attending the Long Island Library Conference on May 1st
Jeremy Johannesen stated that NYLA is sending a print piece of material through the SCLS mail to promote joint SCLA/NYLA membership. The print piece will be going to all librarians in the county. He stated that he understands that we took a large hit on membership this past year and a half and that NYLA is committed to helping our numbers to grow.
Lois Powell (NYLA Membership) will be out of the office for the month of April due to knee surgery, please get any membership requests in to her before April. The NYLA staff will do their best to keep up with her work.
Mike Neppl reported that there are approximately 8 days left in the New York State budget process and right now the NYS Senate is proposing $8 Million dollars in state aid, this looks like it will go through but with just 8 days left it is important for everyone to contact their elected officials. Please go to the NYLA website of Facebook page and follow the link to reach out to your state legislators. The push for public libraries to be exempt from the MTA tax also looks promising to go into effect. This is particularly important for Long Island the city systems. To date, 6000 people from across the state have sent Gov. Cuomo emails of support to restore library aid, NYLA’s goal is to have 5000 people over the next 8 days send emails to their senators.
NYLA Council approved the following sites for future NYLA Conferences:
2015- Lake Placid, 125th Anniversary of NYLA celebration
2016 and 2017 – Saratoga Springs
2018 – Rochester
Joanne thanked Todd Schlitt for all of his work on securing the 3 programs we will be sponsoring at this year’s NYLA Conference. Todd worked diligently with the short amount of time he had, to find the programs that represent SCLA the best. Joanne also urges everyone to return emails in a timely manner. Most of the NYLA/SCLA matters are extremely time sensitive and your input on the subject is always important for us to make informed decisions. She encourages everyone to take a moment to return those emails and let them know your thoughts.

DASL: Claudia reported. DASL held its first publishing workshop in March 7th at Dowling College with Dr. Amy Catalano. The workshop was well attended and feedback was extremely positive. Several attendees had suggestions of topics for future workshops, including a session on working with basic statistics for empirical research with regards to publishing in the field of library science. Given the interest of many attendees at the first workshop, statistics will be the topic of our next workshop which will likely be held in the early fall. Their next meeting is on Thursday, March 27th and we will be discussing bolstering membership and finalizing arrangements for LILC.
RASD: Sara Bedell reported. The Electronic Resources committee will meet at Sachem Library on Thursday March 27. Coffee will be served at 9:30 with the official meeting beginning at 10am. There was great interaction between the speakers and the attendees, allowing for lots of Q&A and amazing ideas to be shared. CIVIL SERVICE: Peter Ward reported. Peter briefly discussed the Civil Service exams. The Librarian 2 scores were released and unfortunately the scores were relatively low and there was only one 100. Peter suggested that the Compentence Index for Librarians, an 85 page document that was compiled by Webjunction may help librarians in the future.
The Librarian 3, 4, Assistant & Library Director training experience exam has closed. Results should be revealed 3-4 months from now.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: Kim Zettwoch reported. The registration was posted for the October 5, Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. We are officially registered as the SCLA Librarians for Life. After discussing the location choices with Jackie, it was decided to go with the Dowling College location as is it a more central location than Jones Beach and the Jones Beach Walk can get a bit over crowded. Dowling is right off William Floyd Parkway and is easily assessable from both Sunrise and the LIE. I have created a blast on Constant Contact and that will be going out by the end of the month. I’ll be looking to have a few fundraising activities, maybe bake sales or yard sales at any library that would be willing to host.

He has been presenting this for over 20 years and in over 40 states. The most amazing thing he shared with us was how much it meant to him to be meeting with us because his inspiration for creating this talk was from a YA librarian from the Longwood Library. YASD will be presenting the B.E.S.T Award at the upcoming Long Island Library Conference to a teen from the Hampton Bays Library. They will be giving away new YASD pens at the Conference and selling raffles for the chance to win a Chromecast and Google Play gift card. SCHOLARSHIP: Terry Hatred reported. She is using a printer on the Internet to print the raffle ticket books this year and they are cheaper than Pt. Jeff Minute Man Press who she used last year. Due to the printer miscalculating the price last year, they got the job done for a quarter of the actual price – $371. We won’t get that price this year. The Internet printers’ price range is no more than $500 for the same order as last year plus envelopes are included in this estimate. She will wait to buy stamps for the raffle booklets until I have the current membership as of October 1, 2014. The raffle books will be ready for the Long Island Library Conference and available for purchase at the SCLA table and Scholarship applications will be available as well. The grand prize for the Scholarship raffle will be a ROKU streaming media device which is priced at $99.00. There will be a flyer at the SCLA table with the raffle tickets to advertise the prize.

IN ATTENDANCE: Sara Bedell-Spataro, Chris DeCristofaro, Sheila Doherty, Jose-Rodrigo Hernandez, Derek Ivie, Robert Johnson, Lisa Kropp, Min Liu, James Matias, Kevin McCoy, Claudia McGivney, Jackie Narkiewicz, Cathi Nashak, Laura Panter, Virginia Antonucci-Gibbons, Nola Thacker, Danielle Waskiewicz, Dawn Wing
CALL TO ORDER: Laura Panter called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. The March 2014 minutes were reviewed and corrected. Jackie Narkiewicz moved to accept the minutes as corrected. Laura Panter seconded the motion. None were opposed. Motion passed.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Jackie Narkiewicz reported. Congrats to Member at Large Todd Schlitt’s new son Benjamin Keith. Jackie thanked everyone for their help at the Long Island Library Conference.
NYLA REPORT: No report.
DIVISION REPORTS:
DASL: Claudia McGivney reported. DASL held a meeting with ASLD president, Larry Paretta, in attendance on 6/19 to discuss a joint program. The proposed program would be on digital formats and academic libraries including online teaching platforms, tutorial design and eBooks. The program would include 3 speakers and be held sometime in October. We are also finalizing another workshop in our publishing workshop series. On 8/13/14 we will host a statistics workshop at Dowling College.
RASD: Sara Bedell reported. Our RASD board met on Tuesday June 10, 2014 at East Hampton Library. Our raffle basket from the LILC was claimed by Joyce Thompson of Patchogue-Medford Library. We also discussed the upcoming RASD Dinner coming up in September. Our Ramblings Newsletter will be published and sent out in the first week of July. Electronic Resources last met on June 12, 2014. The committee heard from Kris Minschke about the differences between Mango and Rosetta Stone. You can experiment with a trial version of Rosetta at http://trial.ebscohost.com (user ID=scls, password=trial) and at the same time take a look at Ebsco’s answer to Zinio, called Flipster. Flipster requires the typical Ebsco log-in authentication process; much less convoluted than Zinio. There is some overlap with titles. While Flipster is easier to access and has no platform fee, the prices of the magazines are higher. Please look at the trials and give feedback to Diane Eidelman at diane@suffolknet.org. They took a fast look at http://reviews.libraryjournal.com/self-e the new self-published e-book collection available in the Fall months from Library Journal. These e-books will be reviewed and vetted by Library Journal, and there will be an author’s portal where writers can submit their own e-books for review. We also looked through the content from https://www.hoopladigital.com/home the digital streaming service available from Midwest Tapes. They offer movies, tv shows, audiobooks, and music. Since it is a streaming service, there are no wait lists and no downloading necessary. Lastly, we heard about the problems Half Hollow Hills Community Library is having with their new Makerbot Fifth Generation printer. If your library is considering purchasing, think about emailing edruda@suffolk.lib.ny.us and asking about their experiences. The next meeting is Thursday September 11 at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library.
CATS: James Matias reported. The Long Island Library Conference went well. Our morning IT v. Librarians program was well attended (over 100 attendees), with positive feedback. Our afternoon (after lunch) RDA program was not as well attended, but feedback from those present was positive. Our first time charging for a raffle was a success, bringing in $196 to offset the cost of our raffle prize, the iPad Mini ($300) while exposing attendees to the benefits of SCLA membership. Last year the prize was a Kindle Fire ($200) and it was a free raffle. Next year we will have our raffle pricing the same for both SCLA and NCLA members.
On May 8th we had our joint SCLA/NCLA Technology Information Forum meeting at Half Hollow Hills. We worked with James Hutter of Nassau County to make it happen. It was well attended by both Suffolk and Nassau county library staff, and we plan to do more group meetings in the future.
On June 5th we had our Technology Information Forum meeting at SCLS. Ruth Westfall spoke about the upgrade to Sierra. Kevin Watson of Queens Library spoke on their approach to handling the Nexus 7 tablets, of which they received 5000. With over 50 IT people on staff and an outside agency working with them, they were able to develop their own Android skin to fully brand the tablets for Queens Library. Louis DeRobertis spoke on an inexpensive OPAC solution.
In the fall we hope to coordinate another RDA Discussion Group meeting, with guidance from SCLS staff. The next Technology Information Forum meeting is planned for September, as we usually see a drop in attendance during July and August.
SSD: No report.
YASD: Kim Zettwoch reported by email. Unfortunately, the YASD Networking Night was canceled due to low interest. The YASD Board will be going forward with more programming in the fall.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Kim Zettwoch reported by email. The registration was posted for the October 5, Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. We are officially registered as the SCLA Librarians for Life. There are a number of people sign up be on our team and walk that day. I’m on the process of planning 1 or 2 restaurant fundraisers. Some places that have been considered are Applebee’s, Friendly’s and Ruby Tuesdays. In addition, Jackie has suggested a new group, Long Island Volunteer Center is part of VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and they are helping people to rebuild their Sandy-damaged homes.
CONTINUING EDUCATION: Teri Hatred reported by email. Comments: All attendance sheets submitted to date, including the 2014 Long Island Library Conference, have been entered into the SCLA Professional Development Database.
A couple of suggestions for next year’s LILC:
The last four digits of attendees’ social security number would help in creating unique ID’s in the database.
Send me the name tags that weren’t picked up so I don’t include them in the database. As it stands now I may have given Professional Development Hours to people who didn’t attend since my list came from NYLA’s registration list not an actual attendance sign-in sheet.
ELSA: Julie Delaney responded by email. ELSA brochures went out in May to all SCLA members and directors (both public and private). We also had brochures at the SCLA table at the LILC. The information was also posted to the list-servs and in the SCLA newsletter. A 2nd mailing went out to the public library directors the week of 6/8 with extra copies of the brochure. Julie DeLaney reported. In July a reminder about the ELSA award will be sent to the list-serv. Please remind your directors, staff and patrons that they have until August 31 to submit nominations.
The committee will meet in September to go over the nominations.
INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM: Kevin McCoy reported. Contest coming up in fall.

NOMINATING: Laura Panter reported. She is in the process of finding interested candidates for next year. Nominations are due in June. Still need VP & Secretary.
SCHOLARSHIP: Terry Hatred reported by email.
Comments: The tickets, envelopes and stamps have been received. I’ll wait until September to ask for a membership list to send out tickets. Then I’ll check October’s membership list for new additions. We will also sell tickets at the dinner. The ROKU and raffle drum will be purchased/rented closer to the dinner.
We sold $25.00 worth of tickets at the Long Island Library Conference to jumpstart sales.
I spoke to several vendors at the conference and will be receiving raffles donations from some of them. Anyone who can wrangle a raffle basket or prize for the Scholarship fund is encouraged to so and it will be gratefully accepted!
We have raffles prizes from the NY Jets, NY Giants, LI Ducks, Stanley Steemer, several theaters, and the Rainbow Book Company.
We have received 3 application requests for the SCLA Scholarship and one application for the Continuing Education Award for Library Support Staff. If you know a coworker who deserves these awards please encourage them to apply. We have sent out reminder flyers via the listserv. Deadlines for application submission are September 1, 2014 and October 1, 2014 respectively.
STATISTICAL SURVEY: Rona Dressler reported by email. I’m not sure if I can attend the meeting, but here’s my report for the Statistical Survey. Due to the changeover with NYLA and issues with the old database, it was decided last year to use Survey Monkey to compile statistics. A new survey had to be created using the NYLA username/password, otherwise we would have to pay for our subscription. Looking over the past data, I finally completed a new survey. The link has been sent to Diane to be emailed to all the directors. Hopefully responses will be coming in over the summer, and I can progress from there.
STUDENT OUTREACH: Lisa Kropp reported. Lisa Kropp dropped off SCLA/NYLA membership fliers at Pratt Institute in Manhattan. She will send a batch out to the other local schools as well.
SUFFOLK COUNTY JAILS LIBRARY SERVICE: No report.

SCLS Auditorium
IN ATTENDANCE: Sara Bedell-Spataro, Julie DeLaney, Sheila Doherty, Teri Hatred, Jose-Rodrigo Hernandez, Min Liu, James Matias, Kevin McCoy, Claudia McGivney, Jackie Narkiewicz, Cathi Nashak, Laura Panter, Michelle Rung, Todd Schlitt, Danielle Waskiewicz, Dawn Wing, Kim Zettwoch
CALL TO ORDER: Laura Panter called the meeting to order at 10:08 a.m. The June 2014 minutes were reviewed and corrected. Cathi Nashak moved to accept the minutes as corrected. James Matias seconded the motion. None were opposed. Motion passed.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Jackie Narkiewicz reported. SCLA Networking Night is July 31 at the Cold Spring Harbor Library. A thank you to Kim Zettwoch for organizing fundraisers for the Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.
NYLA REPORT: Joanne Albano reported through email. NYLA elections ended on July 15th, I hope you all took the opportunity to vote online. All conference brochures have gone out and registration is open! Early Bird registration ends on August 22nd so take advantage of the discount before than! This year NYLA is trying a new “package price” which includes registration for the conference and 5 special events, a great idea for those who want to attend the special events and luncheons at a discounted rate.
My time as a NYLA Council Member is coming to an end in November; I have loved spending the past 3 years working with SCLA and helping through the transition and have also gained so much invaluable experiences working with both SCLA and NYLA. In speaking with Jackie about taking over as a NYLA Council Member, she felt the time spent at meetings was not something she could do outside of work and it was more important for her to continue to assist here at a local level with SCLA as Past President. Jackie and I have asked Todd Schlitt to step into the role of NYLA Council Member for 2014-2015 and Todd has graciously accepted. Todd’s knowledge of the merger of SCLA and NYLA and the history of what has gone on for the past three years as well as his experience on the NYLA Conference Committee this year made him the right person for the job and the right person to represent SCLA on the NYLA Board. I hope you will all agree with our decision and support Todd during his year on NYLA Council.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Jose Hernandez reported. Jose presented the bills to be paid for July, Income and Expense statements. He prepared a draft for the 2014 Fiscal year budget which were in line with past budget expenditures. Jose explained that any differences in the draft were due to two aspects: the merge into NYLA required SCLA budgets to be done from July-June, as opposed to a Calendar year January – December. Secondly, the budget for the Long Island Library Conference were included in a way that did not show total expenditures. The budget draft was was opened to discussion and Committee chairs expressed their recommendations. Jose also mentioned that the Library Conference’s expenditures and income had been entered, and that the Library Conference maintained a profit of $9200.92. This also includes the administrative fee that NYLA collected from the Library Conference. Traditionally, the profit is split between Nassau County Library System 50-50.
