The database is current.

Going forward, if you are hosting a training session, workshop, speaker, etc. for SCLA (or any of the divisions) at SCLS you can use the sign in kiosks at the front desk for your attendance list.  BUT you must still report that meeting name and how many professional development hours attendees have earned to Teri Hatred (sclshr@suffolknet.org ).  If you do not do the latter the training may not be added to the professional development database.  All trainings, workshops, etc., held off site (of SCLS) please send in a copy of the attendance sheet for entry into the database.

When non-members request reports, it would be helpful to allow one free request and then maybe charge if other requests come in through the year.

Please advertise it to the next division meetings and please send it to all of the directors. Maybe we can raffle off 3 memberships for new members.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:   None.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:  Steve Alcalde reported.

For the open house in March, we would like to get a few things approved.

Ally Mercado would like to have headshots for attendees.  It’s a Nassau librarian, Jason, who would charge $400 (digital copies via email).  It might be a nice incentive for people to join.

Suggested donation box for photo or raffles at each division table to draw people in.  Should we focus on what the divisions offer and make the headshots free?   Maybe have a silent auction for raffle tickets, if you come to the event, you get free tickets for coming.  Each division will have raffle tickets.

Vote on $400 for headshots.  Motion approved.

Food for event- Egg & cheese- $40/ BEC- $47

Fruit salad, etc.   $200 budget for breakfast.

Vote on $200 for food.  Motion approved.

A flyer will be made and divisions should promote it.  It will be 930am-1130am.  Tables should be set-up at 9am.

The SCLA board meeting will be at 11:30am following the event.

Should we have nametags for board members and blank ones for people who come to the event?

Derek Ivie asked Steve to pass around a proposal on a Long Island Library Pride Alliance and to start that up.  Possible new committee for SCLA.  NCLA/SCLA would be joint.   We can discuss this next month and find out more information.

LONG ISLAND LIBRARY CONFERENCE:  Brian Adams reported.

The committee last met this past Tuesday, February 11 at the Nassau Library System.

At this point we have 32 tables sold (out of 70), 18 associations vying for tables, 8 corporate sponsors and approximately 80 attendees signed up. We have access to more half tables this year – to use for Associations. What swag are you all thinking of for this year?

Thanks to Stephen Ingram for being the first person to register. How was your experience?

Thanks to Angela Breslin and Roger Reyes for the Corporate Membership List (more on that later). However, we desperately need the list of SCLA only members (like yesterday!).

Programs have all been selected and we hope that there is “something for everyone”. Nancy Pearl is giving the keynote, then signing books and after that giving a program in the 3-4 time slot. She is not flying out until the next morning.

We are looking for an ideal space to park the SLED, we have some spots that we are trying to make final, but we are hoping that Live-brary /  SCLS will contribute to the Conference.

This year Professional Development Hour certificates will be given out (In the bag)(4 hours).

We meet again on Tuesday, March 10th at the Longwood Public Library; all are welcome to attend.

Next year’s Chair will be Martha DiVittorio of the Bellmore Memorial Library.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 ANNUAL DINNER:  Ellen Hobson reported.

Currently, we are unsure if a dinner will be possible at the end of October. Even if it is, libraries might not be willing to send staff after the budget cuts they are all experiencing. Options include cancelling the dinner this year, scaling it back to a lunch, having an award ceremony at a library or doing an outing during the day. We are going to wait until the May 15 meeting to make  a decision so we will have a better idea of when things are reopening.

Maryanne Linehan, the co-chair of the LDA Award committee for NCLA, emailed me to determine what the SCLA Board’s thoughts were on what to do about the award, since the Long Island Library Conference has been cancelled for 2020. After discussion at the meeting, James Hutter, the NCLA president, Catherine Barretta, the other co-chair, and she decided that NCLA and SCLA should have an open discussion about what to do.

The first question is: Should SCLA handle the 2021 election but NCLA would split the cost with SCLA? Or should NCLA handle the 2021 election and have SCLA handle it in 2022?

The second question is: Should the nominees submitted for 2020 instead be entered in the 2021 race. They said yes, and I agree. We always resubmit the losing candidates’ names for the following year as long as their sponsors so desire.

Given the uncertainty of hosting events with large crowds, the Board decided to cancel our annual luncheon that was scheduled for October 8th.

Almost all of our Board nominations for next year have been finalized. We are still looking for a Vice President/ President-Elect for 2021 and 2022. If you know a reference librarian who is interested in joining the RASD Board in this capacity, please tell them to reach out to me at rcecchini@smithlib.org.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 6/2.

We had a Zoom meeting on Wednesday, May 13th.

At the meeting, we discussed online alternatives to our Technology Petting Zoo, which is scheduled for September 10th at 9:30 AM as well as brainstorming ideas for online summer programming.

In lieu of the April Nassau/Suffolk Joint TIF meetings, we have partnered with the NCLA to do joint Nassau/Suffolk Technology meetings every Monday at 1:00 PM. Topics have included Zoom Basics, Remote Calling, Best Social Media Practices, Online Programming, technology demos and more!

We also discussed getting a potential online speaker for the CATS/TIF annual meeting and we are currently speaking to them about dates and payments.

The SSD board will be meeting virtually today, May 15, 20, at 2:00pm. We have not received any response from Call for Nominations at this time. Please share the information with your library staff members.

YASD:  Carisse Bormann – YASD purchased a Zoom account and hosted a YA Virtual Programming meeting on 5/7. We had 57 attendees. The meeting went very well and a lot of ideas were talked about as everyone tries to navigate the new “normal”. We had two popular programmers come on to talk about how they’re hosting virtual programs and what teens are looking for. We also discussed different program ideas for virtual programming, make and take pick up (when we’re allowed) and the future of teen programming. YASD plans to host more programs via Zoom throughout the summer and possibly Fall.

James Hutter, President of NCLA, sends his greetings and hopes that everyone is doing well as we start to reopen our libraries.

He wishes to thank President Steven Alcalde for touching base during the pandemic.

Things have been extremely busy in Nassau as we also start to reopen.

During the height of the pandemic, our joint meetings between the NCLA and SCLA/CATS/TIF Technology groups were CRITICAL for staff in our profession. Library workers from all over Nassau and Suffolk attended our weekly meetings and shared insights on how to provide remote services to patrons, how to support “Work from Home” for staff, and how to 3D print personal protective devices, such as face shields. It was, and continues to be, an amazing partnership between our organizations. Our sessions often have well over 100 attendees.

There will be changes to how and what Advocacy Day looks like next year.  No longer will there be a big one day event where NYLA asks membership to send up buses of people.  As the NYLA Leg Committee figures out what our future advocacy efforts look like I will report back to the executive committee.

YASD:  On November 19, Derek Ivie hosted our November Meeting: Rainbow Resources for Teens on behalf of the new LILPA. Here we learned about the new joint-county committee that is dedicated to servicing all of long island libraries and librarians who share an interest in LGBTQ information and services. Derek informed us of all the ways we could reach our patrons and I believe that everyone took home information with them that way of how to improve their libraries.

We ended the year with our Annual Luncheon virtually on December 3. We introduced the new board, said thank you to the old board, and played a few rounds of trivia. Michele Caya won by a landslide! We also presented the Teen Librarian of the Year Award: Best Overall Program to James Richardson for his Programs to Go program.

RASD was not able to have a virtual luncheon in 2020, however, the Members at Large are planning an event for this year.

CATS:  The CATS/TIF meeting on February 11 had 28 attendees including 4-5 from Nassau County. The next meeting took place on March 11 which was a joint meeting held with Nassau County and had approximately 60 attendees. LEGISLATIVE:

Both the NYS Assembly and Senate have released their “one house” budget bills which will be used with the Governor’s initial budget as the “starting point” for the three-way negotiations on a final State budget.  By law, the State budget must be completed by March 31 for the April 1 start of the new State fiscal year.  Briana McNamee NYLA’s Director of Government Relations & Advocacy created a spreadsheet explaining the different budget proposals .

NYLA:  Todd Schlitt reported via email:

The 2021 NYLA Annual Conference is currently expected to be an in-person event. However, contingency plans are being developed should we have to go virtual. This decision will be made by August 1. Trade Show registration opened on 3/1.

NYLA issued a statement that library workers who have contact with the public should be included in vaccination phase 1b. As of 3/17 the following groups are vaccine eligible:

– Nonprofit public facing eligible

– Public employees, public facing eligible

– Essential workers public facing eligible

– Public facing building workers eligible

NYLA is due for a new Strategic Plan. The process will be presented in future meetings; a task force will be established to craft a draft plan to present to the Council.

MEMBERS-AT-LARGE:

Andrea Malchiodi: May networking event will include a virtual game session as well as a scavenger hunt.  Brainstorming some bigger event nights – maybe once or twice per year, in addition to the dinner, and game/virtual nights.  Thinking about paint nights, cooking class, kayaking???, field day or camping event.  The goal is to increase the fun and togetherness as we move more toward meeting in person, therefore increasing interest in SCLA.
