A message from the SCLA President.

Colleagues,

In order to have more autonomy over our membership, financials, and CEU opportunities SCLA is actively looking to separate from NYLA. SCLA believes in being a resource for all members, and we believe that we will be able to do that more efficiently being our own organization. This will be a long process and the SCLA Board will keep our members informed along the way. Please see the below information regarding membership.

Additionally, please feel free to reach out to me at cmitchell@wbpl.us with any other questions.

I look forward to the new future of SCLA.

Best,

Carisse Mitchell
SCLA President 2022

Long Island Library Conference postponed until 2023

When we were last in touch with you, we were hoping to see you on Thursday, May 12th of 2022 at our annual conference.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we will be able to hold our conference in person in a way that will keep our attendees and vendors safe during the continuing COVID pandemic.  Because of this, the Long Island Library Committee, a joint committee of the Nassau County Library Association and The Suffolk County Library Association, has made the difficult decision to postpone the conference until May 11th of 2023.

While it may seem premature to be making the decision not to hold the conference in May, please understand that the planning required to put together our annual event takes over 10 months.

Aside from outstanding programs, the Long Island Library Conference is known for providing the  opportunity to connect with current and past colleagues, to network, and to establish or strengthen relationships with vendors – all of which our attendees enjoy doing in person.

In addition, the interactive nature of our conference floor makes it almost impossible for us to provide a virtual experience that would come even close to the quality to which you have become accustomed.

We would rather postpone the conference until the following year, giving the public health situation more time to improve, so that we can bring you the quality programs, networking opportunities, and vendors you deserve – in person.

Again, we appreciate your loyalty, and are grateful to you for standing with us during this difficult and uncertain time in all our lives. We sincerely hope to see you all, up close and in person, on May 11, 2023.

~The Long Island Library Conference Committee

CATS/TIF Annual Meeting – Thursday, December 9, 10am @ SCLS and on Zoom

Risky Behavior in a Public Library, or, How Saying “Yes” Mostly Turned Out Okay
Thursday, December 9, 10:00-11:00am @ SCLS Auditorium and Zoom.

Register HERE for in-person or HERE for virtual.

Join us for our annual meeting on December 9, 2021 as we hear from our guest speaker, Maxine Bleiweis, and welcome the 2022 CATS Board. All are welcome. Coffee and breakfast will be provided.

Maxine Bleiweis had no business becoming a public librarian. She was a contrarian and shuddered at keeping things in order. Beinspired as you hear how she turned her assets into triumphs (peppered with failures) as she directed libraries in Connecticut and, to her surprise, was awarded ALA’s Charlie Robinson Award for Innovative Leadership.
