Annual NCLA & SCLA Joint YASD Meeting
Tuesday, March 24th at 11am via Zoom
Hear from Kelly Jensen of Book Riot about the history of book censorship leading to where we are today and trends right now. She’ll also share tools and data for fighting back for both librarians and teens.
Free for NCLA/SCLA members and $15 for non members.

The YASD 2026 Annual Fran Romer Memorial Book Talk will take place on Thursday, April 16, from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM at the South Huntington Public Library. This year’s theme is Graphic Novels: Teen Tales in Panels.
Join guest speaker Mike Cavallaro, author of the Nico Bravo and Eowulf series, for a discussion of the first title in the Eowulf series, Eowulf: Of Monsters and Middle School. Attendees will have the chance to win raffle prizes, earn CEUs, and enjoy lunch.
When registering, please include your top two discussion group choices. Registration closes on March 31.
Cost: $35 for members, $40 for non-members.

Join Kymberlee Powe to learn how to perform a diversity audit on your library collection. Kym shares what a diversity audit is, why we should audit our collections, why the structure of the publishing industry may make it difficult to cultivate inclusivity, and most importantly, why it’s important to build collections that are diverse AND inclusive.
Kymberlee Powe (she/her) is the Children and Young Adult Consultant with the Connecticut State Library. Kym specializes in youth services and literary equity and has presented at various conferences including, the American Library Association Annual Conference, the Connected Learning Summit, Niche Academy, and she has spoken for multiple School Library Journal/ Library Journal professional development courses. In 2023 Kym was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker.

Join Katelyn Hara-Moss Head of Reference Services at Central Islip Public Library and Heather Massa Head of Adult & Teen Services at East Rockaway Public Library to learn how to improve staff responses to teen patrons, communicate effectively with coworkers that are not teen librarians, and address rowdy teens in the library positively.
Because remember, today’s teens are tomorrow’s library voters!

New Board Members will be introduced and YASD Teen Librarian Awards will be presented. Guest speaker will be YA Author Ryan La Sala, whose book The Honeys is set to become a major motion picture!
The lunch will be held at Toast in Patchogue (46 East Main Street, Patchogue, NY 11772). Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten Free options will be available.
The cost to attend is $55 for members and $60 for nonmembers.

It is time to nominate a teen for the Nassau/Suffolk B.E.S.T. Award! For those unfamiliar with this award, library staff members can nominate a teen to receive recognition for their contributions to library services. There will be one winner per county. For more information, please check the attached flyer.
Applications (online or paper) must be received no later than Thursday, April 6, 2023.
The paper application can be mailed to Vivien Cardone at the Riverhead Free Library via system mail, email, or USPS. You can also fill out the online application here.
We will be announcing the winners at the Long Island Library Conference on May 11, 2023.
