DAVE ROMAN

Dave Roman is the author/illustrator of the Astronaut Academy series and writer of the graphic novels Teen Boat! and Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery. He has contributed stories to Comics Squad: Recess!, Explorer: The Mystery Boxes, Nursery Rhyme Comics, and Goosebumps Graphix: Slappy’s Tales of Horror. Dave was a former editor at Nickelodeon Magazine, and is currently editor for First Second’s Science Comics series. He lives in Astoria, NY and draws the weekly webcomic Starbunny, Inc.

The Long Island Libraries and Pop Culture Conference (LIPopCon) is a yearly conference that provides library professionals and library and information science students with the latest information about trends in pop culture. Covering everything from anime and manga to video games and movies to science fiction and fantasy to graphic novels and comic books, LIPopCon informs attendees of  the latest in pop culture and how it affects libraries.

Call for Program Proposals – 2018 Long Island Library Conference

The 2018 Long Island Library Conference will be on May 3, 2018 at the Melville Marriot. The Conference Committee invites program proposals on all areas of librarianship. We are especially interested in proposals that align with the 2018 theme, “Together Towards Tomorrow.”

Conference programs should be 60 minutes long, with the anticipation of 45 minutes of content, and 10 minutes of Q&A.

Proposal Evaluation

The Long Island Library Conference Committee will evaluate all proposals submitted by the deadline using the following criteria:

  • Merit and clarity of the 150-word abstract;
  • Completeness of the proposal, particularly having well-developed content and sufficient speakers to address all relevant aspects of the topic;
  • Originality of proposed topic;
  • Diversity of the content and speaker representation;
  • Appropriateness of proposed format with session content; and
  • Completeness of proposal and presenters.

All proposals will be considered in the context of the overall structure of the meeting and availability of time slots for proposed sessions.

Proposal Submission

The deadline for submitting proposals for the 2018 Long Island Library Conference is December 31, 2017.

Other Important Guidelines

  • INTERNET: Wireless internet will be provided in all program rooms.
  • TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS: The Long Island Library Conference Committee does not make travel arrangements for speakers and presenters. Presenters and/or the sponsors are responsible for making these arrangements.
  • SPEAKER REGISTRATION FEES: Only 2 presenters from each program will receive complimentary registration. These complimentary presenters DO NOT have to register for the conference through the website. Their names will be given directly to registration by the Programs Chair. All other presenters beside the complimentary 2 are required to register for the conference and pay the appropriate registration fee.
  • EQUIPMENT: The Long Island Library Conference Committee will provide internet and things such as projectors, screens, microphones, tables, etc. The committee does not provide laptops. Speakers or sponsors will be required to bring their own laptops.

CATS/TIF Annual Meeting, December 7, 2017, 9:30 a.m.

On December 7th , CATS and TIF will have their Annual Meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the SCLS auditorium. There will be a light breakfast served. Guest speaker Rebecca Stavick from Do Space Omaha will be appearing via video teleconference. She will talk about Do Space, a privately funded public makerspace, successful things they’re doing and will even give a walking tour with their “Dual Robot”. There is no fee to attend.

Julie Whalen of Lynda.com will give a demonstration of their online learning courses, and discuss how to promote them effectively.

Jennifer Bollerman of Patchogue-Medford Library will demonstrate Career Online High School.  Open to all adults in Suffolk County, Career Online High School, offers the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certification online.

Finally, we will end the year with a roundtable discussion on any new Electronic Resources offered in the County.

SCLA’s position on the NYS Constitutional Convention

Suffolk County Library Association advises its’ membership to vote No on the back of the Ballot to a NYS Constitutional Convention this November 7, 2017.

A constitutional convention could allow for the weakening of:

  • NYS Pension Funds
  • Collective Bargaining Rules
  • Benefits for injured workers and social welfare programs.

Additional reasons SCLA supports a No Vote

  • The cost to tax payers.
    • It cost about $6.5 million to stage the last constitutional convention in 1967. The estimated price tag for a Constitutional Convention in 2017 ranges from a conservative $30 Million to $100 Million.
  •  Sitting Legislators and Judges may serve as elected delegates.
    • Many delegates will receive double salaries from the state.
    • Delegates must engage in political campaigns that can be financed by wealthy special interests.
    • Three delegates from each state senatorial district will be elected in November 2018, along with 15 at-large delegates who will be elected statewide. In 1967, of the 186 delegates to the convention, 154 held public office.
  • Lawmakers can amend the Constitution without a Constitutional Convention.
    • The NYS Constitution has been amended over 200 times.
    • Most recently in 2015, an amendment was made to the New York State Constitution to create an independent commission on redistricting, and to allow the Legislature to save money by going paperless for proposed bills.
