Join us as Sam Helmick (they/them), the 2025-2026 ALA President, discusses reflections and practices for grounding ourselves when the world feels like, well, a dumpster fire.
Helmick served as a member of the ALA Executive Board and a past president of the Iowa Library Association. They previously served as former chair-elect on the Intellectual Freedom Round Table and chair of the Iowa Governor’s Commission of Libraries. They have served on committees for the Network of the National Library of Medicine, the Stonewall Book Awards, the ALA Policy Monitoring Committee, Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Michael L. Printz Committee, the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) Sophie Brody Award Committee, and the YALSA Fundraising Task Force. Helmick is a 2016 Emerging Leader, as well as an author, consultant, and instructor for social media marketing and graphic design.

Join Kymberlee Powe to learn how to perform a diversity audit on your library collection. Kym shares what a diversity audit is, why we should audit our collections, why the structure of the publishing industry may make it difficult to cultivate inclusivity, and most importantly, why it’s important to build collections that are diverse AND inclusive.
Kymberlee Powe (she/her) is the Children and Young Adult Consultant with the Connecticut State Library. Kym specializes in youth services and literary equity and has presented at various conferences including, the American Library Association Annual Conference, the Connected Learning Summit, Niche Academy, and she has spoken for multiple School Library Journal/ Library Journal professional development courses. In 2023 Kym was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker.

We’ve picked 8 great books that we hope you’ll enjoy talking about and at the end of the meeting we’ll decide which ones we think deserve the coveted Mock Stonewall Award. Because this is virtual, snacks will not be provided, but feel free to bring your own coffee! Registrants will be sent a zoom link as we draw closer to the meeting date.

LGBTQIA+ Programs & Programmers Database
At the Long Island Library Pride Alliance’s General Membership Meeting in January, it was shared that library staff members would like to know what programs and/or programmers others have had for LGBTQIA+ programming in Long Island libraries. We have put together a form (link on the attached flyer) for everyone to share their programs/programmers. This can be a program you created in house or a program that was run with an outside programmer. We would like to create a living database for staff members to access when they are looking for programming ideas.
