Tour of Stony Brook University’s Innovation Lab – November 7, 2016
The Computer and Technical Services division of SCLA (CATS) is pleased to announce an upcoming tour of Stony Brook University’s Innovation Lab. The Innovation Lab is a collection of three on-campus makerspaces that feature things like vinyl cutters, 3-D printers, green screen and virtual reality technologies.

TIF Meeting,Thursday October 6th at Half Hollow Hills
This month’s Technology Information Forum will be held on Thursday October 6, 2016 at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library in Dix Hills, 9:30 for coffee and 10am for meeting. This month, in light of the release of IOS 10, the discussion will be centered around the level of assistance information technology and librarians provide regarding updating devices for patrons. Do you go “all in” or do you have a handout, or are you strictly hands off? Lets talk about updates on electronic devices, whether its phones, tablets, laptops or other devices (yes even GPS devices).
Also a topic for conversation, what do you do with your old technology? Once computers, monitors, keyboards and/or projectors are upgraded, how does your library dispose of them. Lets talk about how each library goes about this and think of creative ways to repurpose this technology.
Additionally, we always welcome questions and comments for the group with problems, suggestions, innovations and other input from the group. Come join us, won’t you?

SCLA Annual Dinner – November 10, 2016
RASD/TIF Meeting: September 8 at the Islip Library (9:30am coffee, 10am meeting)
Librarians and IT staff understand the importance of working together. With our shared knowledge and experience, we can make our libraries an extraordinary place for our patrons. The CATS TIF committee and the RASD Electronic Resources committee have come together to present a fun program on Thursday September 8 at the Islip Library (9:30am coffee, 10am meeting). No registration necessary.
Librarian Chris DeCristofaro from the Sachem Library will be demonstrating their new 3D scanner – a top recommended brand different from the ones we’ve seen from Makerbot. You will see incredible results! Chris has also arranged for a Skype session with Form Labs, a 3D printer company doing very interesting work.
There will be a discussion on cloud storage – have any libraries gone all cloud?
We will finish with a round-table focusing on our commonalities and shared expectations. Bring your ideas for future programs, ideas for children, teens, and inter-generational activities, and how we can encourage and inspire each other.

TIF Meeting June 9, 2016 at Connetquot Public Library, Learn How To Podcast
The next Technology Information Forum will be held on Thursday, June 9th, 9:30 for refreshments and 10AM meeting.
Learn how to podcast!! We will cover equipment purchasing on a budget, podcast hosting and making life simpler with easy and effective web tools for publishing. We will have sample equipment that can be used by both staff and patrons.

Minecraft Playdate – June 2, 2016
Minecraft is an immensely popular game that draws strong interest from patrons of all ages. Setting up a Minecraft server is simple enough — but do you know the game well enough to run your own program? In this hands-on workshop, participants will get to learn Minecraft by playing it together on a MinecraftEDU server under the guidance of teen librarian, Stacey Sansone. In a relaxed environment designed for Minecraft newbies, we’ll cover:
- What Minecraft is, why it’s important and what the technical requirements are.
- Basic gameplay and game mechanics in simple terminology.
- The difference between student and admin level access.
- How “teacher mode” works and an outline of more advanced modules.
